Contextual information

At Weydon, we are proud of our distinctive uniform and are clear that school uniform plays a key role in promoting pride, self-confidence and a feeling of belonging for all pupils. Our uniform therefore underpins the Weydon Way and our vision of ambition and joy for all.

The Schoolwear Association supports this by suggesting that uniform can contribute to a student’s wellbeing.   A uniform avoids highlighting points of difference between one child and another which can be amplified by socio-economic disparities between one student’s family and another.  A uniform limits this risk, removes the additional pressures of deciding what to wear each day, reduces the added stress of meeting the expectations of peers, and makes life easier for parents and carers.

We believe that the wearing of a smart uniform helps to separate home life from school life as well as removing pressure or opportunity to be ‘left out’ because of fashion trends or affordability of the latest items. Whilst wearing the Weydon School uniform, students represent the school and in turn, the school represents a professional environment based on shared collective values.

We want all pupils to express who they are by the way that they treat other people, the talents that they have and the efforts that they put into their schoolwork and social interactions rather than the way they dress.

This uniform policy has been drawn up in response to the DfE guidance issued in November 2025 Developing School Uniform Policy. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-uniform/school-uniforms

We have therefore:

  • considered the overall cost of the school uniform and ensured that there are only 4 branded compulsory items, including the school tie, in line with this guidance. Other compulsory items are generic and can therefore be purchased from any retailer that sells school clothing
  • avoided listing uniform items based on sex, to give all pupils the opportunity to wear the uniform they feel most comfortable in
  • allowed students with sensory or physical needs to make reasonable adaptations to their uniform, depending on their specific needs, subject to agreement with parents
  • considered how comfortable the uniform will be for students by allowing adaptions to be made in very hot or very cold weather
  • the safety of students as they travel to and from school

Our branded compulsory items can only be purchased at:

Students

Students are expected to wear the correct uniform at all times (other than specified non-school uniform days) while:

  • on the school premises
  • travelling to and from school
  • out-of-school events or on trips that are organised by the school, or where they are representing the school (if required)

Parents and carers

Parents and carers are expected to make sure their child has the correct uniform and PE kit, and that every item is:

  • clean
  • clearly labelled with the child’s name
  • in good condition

Parents/carers are also expected to contact the Vice Principal Mr B. Wish, if they want to request an amendment to the uniform policy in relation to:

  • their child’s protected characteristics
  • the cost of the uniform

Parents/carers are expected to lodge any complaints or objections relating to the school uniform in a timely and reasonable manner in accordance with the school’s complaints policy.

Disputes about the cost of the school uniform will be:

  • resolved locally
  • dealt with in accordance with our school’s complaints policy

The school will work closely with parents/carers to arrive at a mutually acceptable outcome.

Staff at the school

Staff will closely monitor students to make sure they are in correct uniform. Tutor time will be used to give students an opportunity to correct uniform. Where this is not possible, or where students do not abide by the policy during the school day, items, such as jewellery, will be confiscated and students will be issued with a detention.

In cases where it is suspected that financial hardship has resulted in a student not complying with this uniform policy, staff will take a mindful and considerate approach to resolving the situation and the pupil will not miss classroom teaching because of a sanction. This is in line with the statutory guidance

Governors

The governing board will review this policy and monitor its implementation to evaluate whether it:

  • meets the government guidance on securing value for money
  • meets the requirements of the 2010 Equality Act
  •  takes into account the views of parents/carers, and students
